Mixtape 40

I miss making you playlists for your disc drive, so I made you this. I know it’s not the same… but it’s the closest I can get. New mixtape monthly up on my spotify. Find me there at @jawnmo, and if you’re not on spotify, track list included here for you to burn to a cd and turn up the volume on your disc drive. Have a nice week out there

about

I gave you guys a few harder tracks early on this playlist, so I ended it off real mellow for you, with chilled out vibes from Carly Rae Jepsen on “Kollage,” Raphael Saadiq’s great R&B vocals on “I’m Feeling Love,” and ending on Niki & The Dove’s super vibey “Play It On My Radio.” The way Raphael Saadiq sings the word “down” on this track is one of the best things about this song.

Also included in this playlist is the spacey single “Alien Love Call,” a surprising and successful collaboration between hard rock band Turnstile, Jazz fusion group BADBADNOTGOOD, and indie artist and producer Blood Orange.

This playlist also features a couple of my favorite music videos, listed below.

First up is Fever Ray with “Kandy,” one of the strangest music videos I have ever seen. I’d strongly recommend listening to this song before you watch this video. I think music videos have a sticking power - if you watch them with the song for the first time, then they quickly become cemented together. This video in particular is full of life and personality and, if you like it, it’ll make you love the song that much more. So listen to the song first, and watch the video later. The song is fantastic, and has one of my favorite lines on this playlist - “What if I die with a song inside?”

Second is the much acclaimed “Back On ‘74” by Jungle. This had a few viral moments shortly after it came out, and for good reason. Not only is the choreography on this album top notch, the sets, lighting, and cinematography feel like they are meant for a movie. This is my favorite video of the year, and I show it to people far more than I should.

Hidden Gems

Here are some hidden gems on here I think you should know about.

Hey Would U Come My Way - Tia Tia

This artist producer team decided to release a song a week for an entire year, releasing competitive dance and pop recordings under Tia Tia and Beachcrimes. Somehow the quality was excellent across the whole year. This might be my favorite of the bunch, a pop song so short I kept putting it on repeat just to get the full effect.

I Got Heaven - Mannequin Pussy

This song is not for the faint of heart. It starts off quiet (to get you to turn up your stereo), and then comes in really really heavy - “I wanna walk myself, like a dog without a leash, now I’m growling at a stranger, I am biting at their knees.” In the context of this heavy punk rock verse, you might miss the fact that the chorus is surprisingly beautiful, with melodic guitars and soothing vocals.

Veni Vidi Vici - Black Lips

This Mark Ronson produced garage single is another punk rock gem, but from far out in the stoned side of the genre. Something about the second verse always gets me - the line “Sistine Chapel, People Pray” is such a mismatch with the attitude and mood of the song. It’s a sing-song statement of facts, no strings attached, but you feel like you’re supposed to be angry about it. I love it.

Blame It On Each Other - Cale Hawkins

According to his spotify bio, Cale Hawkins is a musician who has primarily moved to writing and recording for other artists like Quincy Jones and Natasha Bedingfield. What this song gets done in a minute and a half is pretty remarkable.
