Mixtape 24
I miss making you playlists for your disc drive, so I made you this. I know it’s not the same… but it’s the closest I can get. New mixtape monthly up on my spotify. Find me there at @jawnmo, and if you’re not on spotify, track list included here for you to burn to a cd and put in your 1996 jeep wrangler and turn up the volume. Have a nice weekend out there
About
When Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars announced they were forming Silk Sonic (and that bass icon Bootsy Collins would be involved) it felt like the world as a whole apologizing to me for the entirety of the COVID pandemic. Here, it seemed, was the world saying “Hey, we know that was pretty rough. Can we make it up to you?” This playlist leads off with the lead single from that album, winner of the Grammy for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best R&B Performance, and Best R&B song.
There are plenty of gems, well-known and unknown on this playlist. I’ll say my favorite albums from this playlist are Late Night Feelings by Mark Ronson, which has some gems from Yebba; Mama’s Gun by Erykah Badu, which is an unbelievable vibe start to finish; and Three. Two. One. by Lennon Stella, produced by one of my favorite producers, Malay.
Hidden Gems
Esa noche - Café Tacvba
My parents had this on a CD that we would listen to all the time when I was little. It came from a world music compilation, but it’s wonderful to listen to - it brings me back to a dark room in a cool house from my childhood, with summertime on the far side of the drawn curtains, the smell of chlorine on a wet towel, and me on my way back to the pool.
Warm - SG Lewis
A lifetime ago, a girl put this on a playlist for me. I love the way the kick punches through the rest of the instrumentation, the high parts the vocals hit. I think the vocal processing is bizarre and strange on this, and it sounds really good.
I Don’t Want to Cry Anymore - Magdalena Bay
What is this. Honestly what is this. It’s gross and dirty and weird and it is so cool and different.
Anything You Want - Spoon
The last line of this song is why I listen to it. I won’t hide the fact that I’m a huge fan of Spoon, an artist that has consistently put out the most perfect indie rock album by album, but there’s something special about the odd vocal delivery at the end of this song. There are too many syllables in that line - it’s not right. But I find myself listening from start to finish just to hear him say “since you were 19 and still in school waiting on a light on the corner down by sound exchange.” It’s not right. It’s great.
